ebook4Presently I’m the Dean of Technology and Business Programs for American Sentinel University (ASU).  I began working for ASU in 2002 when I became the Associate Dean of Business Programs.  Prior to joining ASU, I was a professor and developed online courses for Aspen University.  From 2000 to the present I have developed more than sixty online graduate and undergraduate courses in Business, Technology, Business Intelligence, Healthcare/Nursing, and Criminal Justice.   I have been involved with obtaining DETC accreditation for new courses and new degree programs such as BSBA, BSBA-Human Resource Management, MS-Nursing, RN to BS-Nursing, MS-Business Intelligence, MBA, MBA-Sustainable Management, and MBA-Healthcare.

I have taught a variety of online courses including the following graduate courses: MBA Capstone-Research, MBA Capstone-Business Simulation, MBA Capstone-Strategic Planning, Strategic Management, Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Change Management, Management Theory, Nursing Research, Human Resource Management-Healthcare, and Modern Organizations in Healthcare.  At the undergraduate level in a classroom setting, I have taught Senior Capstone Research Course, Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing, Marketing Management, Organizational Development, Management Theory, and Personal Finance

ebook65Within my role at ASU, I also lecture at Ningbo Dahongying University in China.  In addition to classroom teaching, I work with Ningbo Dahongying University President Wu Guoliang on matters related to faculty development.  The picture on the left was taken during my May 2008 visit to Ningbo Dahongying University, with an ASU visiting professor a several other faculty members.  My work with Ningbo Dahongying University also includes teaching online courses, including the Senior Capstone Research course.

also work with my wife who is the Managing Partner of eLearning and Development.  We provide teaching, research, curriculum development, and consulting services to on-line educational institutions and corporations who wish to provide on-line education for their employees.

Recently, Dr. Dani Babb and I completed writing a book about online course development.  This book has the working title: A Guide to Online Course Development for Trainers, Professors and Learning Entrepreneurs.  I have also recently completed work on a textbook with the working title: Change Management 360.  I have also written several ebooks including: Change Navigation, Breakthrough Change Management, Breakthrough Performance Management, Leading and Developing Teams, Breakthrough Performance Management for Teams, Performance, Making Changes, and Corporate Culture, and Human Performance Architecture.

American Sentinel University

At American Sentinel University I created entire degree programs including a Masters Degree in Business Administration, a Masters Degree in Business Administration – Healthcare, and Masters Degree in Business Intelligence.  I developed more than 60 online courses in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, Web Design, Geographic Information Systems, Nursing, and Technology Management.  I played important roles in obtaining DETC accreditation for degree programs.  I taught numerous online courses in Information Systems, Nursing Management, and the MBA program including those related to Change Management, Strategic Management, Organizational Behavior, the MBA Capstone course, Human Resource Management, and Nursing Research.  Dr. Dani Babb and I have recently completed a book on developing online courses for universities and training organizations.  We expected to have a contract with a publisher by the end of 2008.

My Consulting Career Summary

Prior to founding eLearning and Development with my wife, I worked exclusively for a client in China to help them establish a joint venture technology company in China with Compaq Corporation. From 1996 to late 1998, I was the Managing Director of Change ebook7Management, Greater China, for Andersen Consulting (now called Accenture Consulting). I managed more than 50 consultants based in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taipei, generating more than $4 million in annual revenues. The picture on the right is from a seminar and retreat I hosted for my staff in Hong Kong.  I joined Andersen Consulting in 1994 and was initially assigned to the Atlanta office. In 1995, I was promoted and transferred to Andersen’s consulting office in Seoul, Korea. A year later, I moved to Taiwan and assumed responsibility for the Greater China Change Management Consulting Practice.

From 1992 to 1994, I worked for Alexander & Alexander Consulting, initially to establish an Organizational Effectiveness consulting practice in Atlanta.  Later, I was appointed National Practice Leader for Organizational Effectiveness consulting in Canada.

From 1988 to 1992, I was a Principal with the Watson-Wyatt Company in Phoenix where I orchestrated the start-up of an organizational effectiveness consulting practice.  I conducted a variety of human resource consulting assignments in the Mountain States Region, specializing in performance management, organizational development, and compensation.

From 1982 to 1987, I founded and managed my own consulting firm in Dallas, Texas – Phillip Ash & Associates. Through his firm, I participated in several corporate turnaround projects in Tulsa, OK – most notably Telex Computer Products and Liberty Glass Company.  In addition, he partnered with Sun Venture Capital Partners to conduct due diligence studies and turnaround proposals.

I began my consulting career with Ernst & Young as a Senior Consultant in 1977.  Later I became a Manager in the Dallas Office and served as Practice Leader until 1982.

Prior to consulting, I was a member of the faculty at Columbia College and the University of Missouri.

Online Cheating a Big Problem?


One of the clouds appearing on the horizon for online universities is The College Opportunity and Affordability Act signed by President Bush late in 2008. This new law requires universities to authenticate test takers taking online courses through costly identification technology or with exam proctors.


The federal Education Department is expected to release guidelines for implementing this new law in the months ahead so the new law can be made effective later this year or early 2010. They say the “devil is in the details,” but on the surface this provision of the new law seems to provide uncertain benefits combined with certain increases in costs for online universities – and ultimately their students.

In November of 2008, the U.S. News and World Report estimated the average net present value of a four-year college degree is around $300,000. Of course, graduates with career-related degrees like Business, Nursing, and Technology will find the value of their degrees will be much greater compared graduates in Humanities or History.

Why Online Students Stop Studying


November 2008, Education Dynamics conducted a survey of 150 online students who discontinued their effort to earn an online degree or certificate program. Perhaps the most surprising result was the finding that almost half of the online students surveyed failed to complete their first course.
