Technology around the World

August 22, 2009

Many countries around the world are struggling to survive. People in these countries are losing hope and do not see any change in the future because it has been going on for so long.

The availability of computers plays a vital role in the development process of a country. For example, if an impoverished country is given access to computers in their homes, and especially their schools, they now have a much more possible future filled with continual education and even a healthy life.

A country like Spain does not have this problem as much as some countries in Africa do, but they, like almost every country, have this problem in some way or another. Most, if not all, countries have areas within them that are forced to survive without their children having access to computers or other crucial tools that aid the development that is needed for a successful future.

In the United States, the ratio of a computer in a home vs. a computer not in a home is significantly higher than in any other country in the world. Spain, and several other countries have a fairly strong computer presence. The issue is with the countries that are struggling to the point of no return.

Helping the countries that cannot help themselves is what some computer companies have done. By building computers that are more affordable than ever, many countries can place more computers in their schools and homes than anyone would have ever imagined. This is doing wonders for the development of some struggling countries.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the old adage, “give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” Well, helping these countries become more developed with a greater computer presence is doing just that, teaching them to fish.

If you have the right tools for the right job, it makes the job easy. Making a computer available to a child will give them the tools they need to create a better future for themselves.

Online, there is an infinite compilation of resources that can help people in all circumstances of life advance from their current level of education. This has proven to be one of the best methods for learning and should be given to as many people as possible.

Online Cheating a Big Problem?

One of the clouds appearing on the horizon for online universities is The College Opportunity and Affordability Act signed by President Bush late in 2008. This new law requires universities to authenticate test takers taking online courses through costly identification technology or with exam proctors.

The federal Education Department is expected to release guidelines for implementing this new law in the months ahead so the new law can be made effective later this year or early 2010. They say the “devil is in the details,” but on the surface this provision of the new law seems to provide uncertain benefits combined with certain increases in costs for online universities – and ultimately their students.
