Online Schools- A Popular Choice for Students

May 26, 2009

Online schools are sweeping the nation, and the world, with their popularity thanks to a faster internet and more innovative technology. Computers and the internet now move at speeds that are quicker than ever, which makes online courses a very useful option for many people. The internet has changed so much in the past 10 years, making slow connections and inferior computers almost obsolete.

It’s easy to find online schools where you can participate in classes, take tests, and do assignments online without any trouble at all. The growth of the internet has created a world where nothing is holding anyone back from getting the education that they desire. It’s never been easier to get an education as it is with the development of online schools.

Online schools are popular for many reasons. First, they allow more flexibility and fewer time constraints than typical colleges do. While some programs allow the coursework to be done entirely on your time, others might require a scheduled class time here and there. Still, though, being able to access that class from home or anywhere you are is a great advantage over a traditional education.

You could be at home, on vacation, or even just out in the world, and still be able to do your course work. You could be relaxing on the beach doing an assignment on your laptop, or in a local coffee shop taking a test or participating in a lecture. The sky is the limit with online courses, which is a large part of why so many people turn to these classes to achieve their education goals.

There are endless schools and programs out there, and finding the right one for your needs is essential. Location won’t be an issue, but the programs that the online schools offer will. You could easily attend a top-rate school across the country from the comfort of home, instead of having to limit your options to a less qualified program near you. Online courses can allow you all kinds of certificates and degrees. You can find everything from bachelor’s degrees and technical certifications to doctorate degrees and continuing education courses related to your career.

The cost of online schools is much cheaper than traditional education, and you’ll still get the same attention that you would from a traditional college course. You can use e-mail and chat servers to communicate with professors and classmates at anytime, and you can easily get more one-on-one attention than you might from a physical college class. A final benefit to online education is that you’re helping the environment. You won’t be using gas to commute, and you will not waste paper for assignments or textbooks, because you’ll take classes right from home or wherever else you want and do the work online.

Online Cheating a Big Problem?

One of the clouds appearing on the horizon for online universities is The College Opportunity and Affordability Act signed by President Bush late in 2008. This new law requires universities to authenticate test takers taking online courses through costly identification technology or with exam proctors.

The federal Education Department is expected to release guidelines for implementing this new law in the months ahead so the new law can be made effective later this year or early 2010. They say the “devil is in the details,” but on the surface this provision of the new law seems to provide uncertain benefits combined with certain increases in costs for online universities – and ultimately their students.
