How To Choose Between Campus and Online Colleges

March 11, 2009

In order to decide between an online or traditional college education, a student must weigh the pros and cons.

The Pros and Cons of Online College Courses

The greatest benefit to attending an online school is the amount of flexibility that is offered to students. Students enrolled in online programs are able to pick and choose what online courses they want to take. Plus, students at an online college can chose when they go to class. In addition, many online colleges have direct route programs, which means you can earn your degree in a much shorter period of time than traditional colleges.

The downside to a traditional college is that this type of school does not offer the student much flexibility when it comes to choosing courses and class schedules. For someone that works full-time or has a family, a traditional college makes it more difficult to receive a degree. Not all students are able to take a required course that starts at 8 a.m. or noon.

Depending upon the major and each college’s reputation, a degree from a traditional college may be held at a higher value in the workplace then an online degree. However, this will change as students attend online degree programs. In fact, the University of Phoenix has the largest number of enrolled students than any college in America.

Evaluate your needs to choose the best option for you

There certainly are both advantages and disadvantages to taking courses at either an online or traditional college. In order to decide which type of college is best for you, it is important to evaluate the amount of time you have to dedicate to your education. Consider the specific field you would like to enter; there are some online programs that are more prestigious that traditional universities, and vice-versa.

The most important factor to remember is that no matter how you obtain your college degree, the degree is the most important part. A college degree offers many career opportunities, whether that degree is from a traditional or online school.

Online Cheating a Big Problem?

One of the clouds appearing on the horizon for online universities is The College Opportunity and Affordability Act signed by President Bush late in 2008. They say the “devil is in the details,” but on the surface this provision of the new law seems to provide uncertain benefits combined with certain increases in costs for online universities – and ultimately their students.
